The Decauville Railway Vigía Chico - Santa Cruz ( Spanish Ferroaril Decauville de Vigía Chico ) was a nearly 57 kilometers long military - narrow-gauge railway with a gauge of 600 mm, which was built during the Box War near Santa Cruz (today Felipe Carrillo Puerto ) in Mexico and operated from 1905 to 1932.

history

On December 13, 1901, the material for the railroad was ordered in New Orleans . On April 16, 1902, 250 tons of narrow-gauge railway material were delivered to the General Vega Camp at the port of Vigía Chico. The line was officially opened on September 4, 1905.

Between 1905 and 1912, the Mayans carried out ongoing harassment and attacks on the military railroad. When General Bravo was driven from Santa Cruz, the Mayans began to destroy them. In 1913, the governor of the territory, General Arturo Gracilazo Juárez , ordered the reconstruction.

In 1918, General Venustiano Carranza granted Mayan leader Francisco May a concession to use the narrow-gauge railway to transport rubber .

On February 1, 1927, the President of the Republic Miguel Angel Ramoneda gave the order to rebuild the former military railway . On August 7, 1929, General Francisco May again applied for the concession of the former military railway, which was approved by the government by canceling the concession he had received from Ramoneda. In 1932, when natural rubber production hit rock bottom, the railroad became meaningless.

Locomotives

In the beginning there were three steam locomotives with 40 HP each, ten cars with 6 tons each, 14 flat cars with 3 tons each. The total cost of the equipment was $ 239,967.59. Added to this was $ 8,622 for tools, the construction of the platforms and the leveling of the route.
