Deceangli

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tribes in Wales before the Roman invasion. Limits are presumptive.

The Deceangli or Deceangi were one of the Celtic tribes in Britain before the Roman invasion. The tribe lived in the north-east of Wales , although it is not certain whether its area was limited to the present-day counties of Flintshire and Denbighshire or whether it went west beyond that.

The tribes in Wales were attacked by the legate Publius Ostorius Scapula, who attacked the Deceangli around 48 AD. Obviously they surrendered almost without resistance, in contrast to the Silurians and Ordovicians , who resisted the Romans long and bitterly. There is no known Roman city in the tribal territory. However, the fort "Canovium" (Caerhun) was in their land, which could also have been inhabited by civilians around them.
