Dedas Lewana

Dedas Lewana ( Georgian დედას ლევანა ; civil: ლევან ასაბაშვილი, Lewan Asabashvili ; * 1854 in the Kakheti region , Georgia ; † 1936 ) was an important Georgian folk singer in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was characterized by a perfect mastery and interpretation of Georgian folk songs, especially from the Kartli-Kakheti region.

Levan Asabashvili had a large vocal range and a soft voice with a beautiful tenor. He sang classical songs from Kakheti like "Chakrulo", "Mrawalzhamier", "Cheuro", "Gushin schwidni Gurdschanelni", "Chonguro" and others. The first recordings were made in 1912. In 1927, on the initiative of the great Georgian poet Iosseb Mtschedlishvili , he had his first public appearance on the stage of the Shota Rustaveli theater with other singers from the Kakheti region .
