Deflagrator

A deflagrator ( Hare's spiral , calorimotor ) is an outdated galvanic device (an interconnection of galvanic cells ) for generating high voltages with strong currents, e.g. B. to vaporize a short-circuiting wire in a pulsed manner (cf. deflagration ).

The deflagrator was developed by Robert Hare (1781-1858) and perfected by Sibrandus Stratingh .

For example, a deflagrator is described as follows:

Four layers of the same size made of cloth, copper sheet, cloth, zinc sheet are rolled tightly together in a spiral so that the two metals do not touch anywhere. When immersed in dilute sulfuric acid, a galvanic element is created, which can generate a high current due to the low internal resistance due to the large metal surfaces. Several (at Hare a total of 80 initially, divided into 2 x 40 in a sulfuric acid trough each) of such elements are connected in series.

Later, Hare even interconnected 250 such galvanic elements, which had been modified to a flat design, and produced, among other things. a. an electric arc between carbon electrodes and in mercury. He called the device a deflagrator - presumably because he could use it to explosively vaporize iron wires.
