Degel haTora ( Hebrew דגל התורה, German "the banner of the Torah" ) is an Ashkenazi ultra-Orthodox party in Israel . The “banner” in the name is the deliberately chosen counterpoint to the flag of the State of Israel.
Degel haTora came into being in 1988 as a split from the Agudat Jisra'el and was founded by Rabbi Elasar Menachem Schach . It represents the non- Hasidic part of Ashkenazi ultra-Orthodox Judaism, so it is in the tradition of the Lithuanian Mitnagdim . In the 1988 elections she won two seats and belonged to the government of national unity (without portfolio). Since the parliamentary elections in 1992 , the party joined the Agudat Jisra'el on a common list ( United Torah Judaism ). This alliance broke up in 2004 during the 16th Knesset over the question of joining the government under Ariel Sharon . Before the elections in 2006, however, they merged again. Of the 6 seats that the United Torah Judaism received, two went to Degel haTora . They are perceived by Moshe Gafni and Uri Maklev . These two MPs also represented the party in the 18th Knesset elected in 2009 and also since the 2015 parliamentary elections .
