The brewery and distillery Jos. Degraa Erben KG was founded in Aachen in 1821 by Peter Josef Degraa . In 1888 Joseph Degraa bought the brewery and distillery Bärenhof, founded in 1850, from the brewer Christian Körfer. From 1932 Degraa brewed a light, top-fermented lager based on the Cologne brewing method, mainly under the name Degraa Obergärig . In 1941 the Bärenhof was destroyed by an aerial bomb in an air raid and was only rebuilt in 1949, including the beer cellar . In 1985 the building burned down to the ground and was rebuilt in 1987.

The brewery's 1955 advertising slogan "Grandpa turned 100 - he always drank Degraa top-fermented" was particularly well known . The saying was satirized in the Aachen vernacular with the addition "Grandma turned 110 - had never seen Degraa" . Even the advertising slogan "Oecher drives oecher beer" did not prevent the takeover of the brewery by the Cologne Cathedral Brewery , which became necessary in 1989 and which was purely for reasons of market policy and resulted in the cessation of the brewery.

Some of the former Degraa breweries in Aachen are still reminiscent of the former regional beer specialty with their names, for example the Aachener Brauhaus am Theater, which is known next to the Bärenhof and in which, in addition to the so-called brewery bar, is also the smallest pub in Europe .

From July 1, 2011 there was again a beer called Degraa, which was initially brewed in Krefeld using the contract brewing process. However, it was now a Pilsner beer . After Helmut Schwichtenberg, the son of the last Degraa master brewer Karl-Heinz Schwichtenberg, had secured the trademark rights to Degraa in 2007, he produced Degraa Pils with Otto Schneider. Production was stopped again in May 2014.
