The Deilenaar is a small breed of rabbit weighing 2.75 to 3.25 kg.

Appearance

The Deilenaar is a wild-colored animal whose fur is given a red-brown color by the effect of the yellow enhancer. The dark guard hairs give the fur a flaky shade. The belly should be yellow to tan , the edges of the ears are strong black. The top of the flower is dark. The animals are short and stocky, the chest and pelvis are wide, the trunk cylindrical. The Deilenaar stands on strong, medium-length legs.

History of the breed

The Deilenaar was bred by GWA Ridderhof from giant rabbits in the color of rabbits and tan rabbits around 1930 and named after its hometown Deil in the Netherlands (Deilenaar in Dutch "Deilener"). The breed was recognized in the Netherlands in 1940, but its development was severely hampered by World War II. The breed was recognized in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1975. The breed came to the GDR partly by adventurous routes, and partly new breeding took place using small chinchilla , Sachsengold and tan rabbits. The presentation as a new breed took place here in 1985.

Sandford states rabbits , chinchillas and red New Zealanders as starting breeds for the Deilenaar , which is rather unlikely due to the size of the breed. He said it was approved as a breed in Great Britain in the late 1980s.

Similar races

The rabbit in its original color and the chestnut-brown Lothringer or "Brun Marron de Lorrain" show similar fur colors . At 2.2–2.4 kg, the chestnut-brown Lorraine people are slightly smaller than the Deilenaar and show a lower effect of the yellow enhancer. Their overcolour is chestnut brown and the underside is straw yellow to white.
