Uninstaller

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An uninstaller , colloquially Uninstaller called, is a program that one already on the computer installed program uninstalled .

The point is to find and delete all of the program's files and system settings, but not to damage any other programs, files or settings. Uninstall programs are often already included in program installations.

Windows

An uninstaller should usually not only remove files from the hard disk, but also entries from the Windows registry . Often this does not work completely and unnecessary entries are left behind. User-specific settings are sometimes deliberately left behind, e.g. B. to be available again for later installations. In general, however, these non-removed entries do not interfere. The bigger problem is the excessive use of dynamic libraries shared by multiple Windows programs; the deinstallation process may only delete what is not needed otherwise.

More modern operating systems

In more modern operating systems , an explicit deinstallation program is no longer required because package managers and installation services (e.g. the Windows Installer service) can also uninstall software in addition to installing software.

Mac OS X

The package manager of Mac OS X processes ".pkg" files and ".mpkg" files that the installation archives contain. However, Apple does not provide an uninstall program, although the package management system provides one. Instead, you can also use programs from other manufacturers, such as the desinstaller or the uninstaller. In most cases, however, it is sufficient to simply delete the installed program; H. to the trash.

With Mac OS X, instead of a registry concept, the program settings are stored as XML files in the user-specific directory ~ / Library / Preferences or ~ / Library / ApplicationSupport. These files exist for every user who has ever used the respective program and must be deleted manually or by other means if necessary.
