Deirdre Cartwright
Deirdre Cartwright (born July 27, 1956 in London ) is a British guitarist of fusion jazz .
Life
Cartwright learned to play the piano as a child, but is self-taught on the guitar . Since 1973 she has played in various jazz combos in her hometown , but also in big bands . In 1981 she founded the “Guest Stars”, a female fusion band, with Ruthie Smith and other musicians. She was engaged as a guitar specialist in the BBC's "Rockschool" television course and also wrote teaching material for the series, which reached 2 million viewers in Great Britain and was also broadcast in other countries.
In 1984 she toured the United States with the "Guest Stars" and then to other countries. The band released three albums; the first in particular was successful. After the band broke up in 1988, Cartwright worked with musicians such as Ian Shaw , Carol Grimes, Annie Whitehead (Vortex Foundation Big Band) and Tal Farlow . In 1992 she founded her own quintet (Deirdre Cartwright Group), which included not only her two "Guest Star" colleagues Alison Rayner (bass) and Louise Elliott (saxophone) the percussionists Chris Baron and Gary Hammond, with whom she toured several times and submitted albums with their own compositions. In 1998 she was touring with keyboardist Janette Mason, Alison Rayner and Carola Gray .
Deirdre Cartwright also played with the Electric Landladies , Sisters in Jazz , the Giant Steppes and Marjorie Whylie, and ran her own jazz club in London, Blow the Fuse (with Alison Rayner), named after a band she had with Rayner in the late 1980s. and also appeared as a radio host on the BBC Radio 3 program Jazz Notes .
