The internet platform dekoder.org (own spelling: дekoder or dekoder or dekoder.org) combines Russian journalism in German translation with contextualizing contributions by European scientists. The site's slogan is Deciphering Russia . The founder of the project is Martin Krohs, current managing director Anton Himmelspach, and editor-in-chief is Tamina Kutscher. The non-profit project is supported by dekoder- gGmbH based in Hamburg . The web portal has been online since September 2015.

aims

dekoder has set itself the goal of enriching the Russia debates in German-speaking countries with journalistic voices from Russia itself and making these voices understandable for non-Russian-speaking readers through contextualization . Particular attention is paid to independent internet media that are not financed and controlled by the Russian state.

Formats

decoder translates articles from independent Russian media such as Republic, Kommersant , Novaja Gazeta . Terms and phenomena that are not generally known outside of Russia are explained by scientists from German and European research institutes in their own background texts. These background texts , written according to scientific standards, are called on the website of dekoder Gnosen (from Greek gnosis 'knowledge').

Translations and Gnoses are linked by crosslinks; a dynamic screen display enables you to switch back and forth between the two categories. decoder describes itself as a hybrid format due to the close interlinking of journalism and science .

dekoder also regularly publishes debates on current topics with translated sections of text from independent and state-owned Russian media, formats with photo series by young Russian photographers, interactive infographics and topic dossiers.

Sponsorship and funding

The dekoder-gGmbH as the supporting organization is a non-profit GmbH with the statutory objectives of international understanding and education. The project is supported by donations, the internet offer is free of charge. The portal is independent of government funding and does not accept funding from party foundations.

decoder is looked after by six permanent employees (journalists, scientists and translators); The site contains contributions from around 50 translators and scholars who work as freelancers with the project.

Mentions and awards

There have been articles about decoder in various German media, such as the Süddeutsche Zeitung , the Frankfurter Rundschau , on netzpiloten.de and on Deutschlandradio Kultur . In February 2016, Medium Magazin voted decoder into the top ten best journalistic projects of 2015 (founder Martin Krohs in the Entrepreneur category). On June 24, 2016, decoder received the Grimme Online Award in the “Information” category. According to a study by the online newspaper Russland.RU from November 2016, Dekoder is the seventh-largest provider in terms of the number of followers in social networks among Russian online newspapers in German .
