Demodex canis is a slender, about 250 to 300 microns long mite, which in the hair follicles (hair follicles), and sebaceous glands of dogs parasitized . There it feeds on sebum and the naturally shed cells. This Demodex mite is a small part of the skin fauna of hairy mammals. If more prevalent or if the immune system is weakened, it causes canine demodicosis .
The female mites lay eggs, which develop into the adult mites through a larval and nymph stage .
More recently, other Demodex canis -like mites have been described that are larger or smaller, apparently rather reside on the surface of the skin and feed on keratin .
