Demography of Denmark

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article deals with the national demographics of Denmark , but not with developments in the Faroe Islands and Greenland .

National demographics

Since 1980 the number of natives in Denmark has remained constant at around 5 million, and almost all of the population growth from 5.1 to 5.8 million in 2018 was due to immigration from abroad.

According to statistics from 2017, 86.9% of Denmark's population of 5,760,694 were of Danish descent, which means that at least one parent was born in Denmark and has Danish citizenship. The remaining 13.1% were of foreign origin, defined as immigrants or the descendants of recent immigrants. The most common countries of origin were Poland , Turkey , Germany , Iraq , Romania , Syria , Somalia , Iran , Afghanistan and the former Yugoslavia and its successor states. A total of 752,618 people correspond to this definition. Of all foreigners in the country, 36% had a migration background from a western country ( Europe , North America or Australia ) and 64% had a background from a non-western country. The historical minorities in the country include Germans , Jews and Roma . People from Greenland and the Faroe Islands have Danish citizenship.

In terms of average age , Denmark is in the middle of the range of European countries. Denmark has a fertility rate that is above the European average . In terms of life expectancy , however, it is slightly below the Western European average.

religion

Freedom of religion is guaranteed by the Basic Law of Denmark .

Although Danish society is highly secularized , almost 75% of the population traditionally belong to the Evangelical Lutheran Danish People's Church (Folkekirken) , which emerged in the 16th century as part of Protestantism (see Reformation in Europe ). Almost 20% are members of a Protestant free church or electoral parish inspired by the Danish church reformer Grundtvig . The Danish People's Church is the only religious community that is closely linked to the state. Parliament and the queen jointly exercise the leadership of the church, the highest administrative authority is the church minister.

Catholics ( Diocese of Copenhagen ) (0.6%) and Muslims (5.3%) mostly come from immigrant families. The Christian religions also include Jehovah's Witnesses (0.3%), Serbian Orthodox and Baptists . Jews (~ 0.1%) have lived in Denmark since the second half of the 17th century.
