Monument to Johann Ludwig Christ
The Johann Ludwig Christ monument in Kronberg im Taunus honors the “fruit priest” Johann Ludwig Christ and is a listed building .
history
After some attempts to honor the pastor, who died in 1813, with a memorial had failed, an initiative of the Kronberg Fruit and Horticultural Association was successful in 1885. A non-denominational citizens' committee was formed for the memorial and, together with the fruit and horticultural association, collected donations for the memorial of the famous pomologist . The inauguration took place on November 22, 1885. More than 400 guests attended the opening (despite the pouring rain) and then celebrated in the newly built Schützenhof. The participation of the Catholic population in the erection of a memorial for a Protestant pastor was particularly highlighted in the press (for the confessional conflicts in the city, see Streitkirche ).
The monument
The memorial is located on Katharinenstrasse and therefore close to the Catholic Church . It consists of a multi-articulated stone column, which is crowned by a bronze sculpture. This shows a still life made of different types of fruit and refers to the work of Pastor Christ. The side facing the street wearing a round medallion of bronze that the portrait shows the honoree. The portrait was created from contemporary models. Christ looks to the left in the direction of the Kronberg orchards. The sides of the monument are also adorned with bronzes that have floral patterns.
