Building description

The Aurich monument was made of Bentheim sandstone . It is a neo-Gothic victory column standing on a three-tiered pedestal and has the shape of a sacrament house . In each of the four lower gables it is provided with an iron cross . The inscriptions are now partly difficult to read. On one side there is a laurel wreath and the year 1870–1871 as well as the inscription "The warriors of the city of Aurich, who died for the fatherland". On another page the names of 23 fallen soldiers are listed.

history

The monument to the fallen of the Franco-German War is the oldest war memorial in the area of the city of Aurich. The location was long considered controversial. The proximity to the castle and the barracks was the decisive factor in the fact that the monument commission decided on an installation at the corner of Burgstrasse and Schloßplatz. The road construction inspector Albrecht designed the monument based on the model of the Kreuzberg monument . The Emden sculptor Müller finally made it out of Bentheim sandstone. The monument erected in 1877 cost a total of 4,000  marks . According to today's conversion, this corresponds to around 40,000 euros .
