Landfill attendant

Landfill waiting to be on landfills used. You are employed by waste disposal companies and are responsible for the ongoing operation of a landfill as well as for the incoming control of the delivered waste.

You are responsible for the registration and control of the delivered cargo. They take samples from leachate and landfill gas from the landfill and carry out routine control analyzes in the laboratory, such as entrance controls, sampling of landfill gas, leachate and solids and rapid tests. You are also responsible for the machines used on the landfill, such as wheel loaders , garbage compactors and bulldozers . In the event of incidents in landfills, they initiate the first emergency measures.

Landfill attendants have to complete a state-recognized training course lasting five days, for example in Austria; there are similar courses in Germany.

The following are generally formulated as professional requirements: Understanding of technical processes, manual dexterity, the ability to cooperate, logical and analytical thinking skills as well as insensitivity of the skin and to smells. The courses also deal with the Waste Disposal Ordinance, Landfill Ordinance, Recycling Act and Waste Act , Federal Immission Control Act , Soil Protection Act and other legal principles such as trade association rules and accident prevention regulations . Furthermore, chemical basics and techniques of landfill and aftercare of waste are taught.

In Austria, for example, job prospects are currently assessed as being dependent on economic developments, as the number of vacancies has only increased slightly since 2000.
