Atlético Cihuatlán is a football club from the city of Cihuatlán in the Mexican state of Jalisco , which was originally registered under the name Deportivo Cihuatlán .

history

It was founded in 1998.

Deportivo Cihuatlán

In the 1998/99 season "Deportivo Cihuatlán" won the championship of the fourth-class Tercera Division and rose to the third-rate Segunda Division . In the winter of 2001, the team also won the championship of this league and rose at the end of the 2001/02 season in the second-rate Primera División 'A' , in which they were represented during the following season 2002/03.

In the Apertura 2002, the newcomer took second place in his group and qualified for the Repechaje , in which Cihuatlán had to deal with the Club Acapulco . After a 2-2 draw in Acapulco, Cihuatlán lost 2-0 in the second leg in front of their own audience at the Estadio Llanito and missed the Liguillas .

The team achieved this in the Clausura 2003 after it had previously won its own group and had taken second place in the overall table behind Club León . In the quarter-finals of the Liguilla they beat Celaya FC 3: 1 and 5: 3 and failed in the semi-final against CD Tapatío with 3: 4 and 3: 6. The Tapatíos thus managed to take revenge for the final defeat in the 2001 Segunda División winter tournament.

Although the team was on the right track in terms of sport, the club management was forced to sell the second division license to the Dorados de Sinaloa due to the lack of support from sponsors and the lack of financial means .

Atlético Cihuatlán

The restart went under the name "Atlético" in the Tercera División, which was won again in the Clausura 2007, so that Cihuatlán was at least third class again in the 2007/08 season.

The newcomer knew how to convince right from the start and took second place in the western season ( Zona Occidente ) in the Apertura 2007 , although he was a debacle in the quarter-finals of the Liguilla against the upcoming champions and later promoted Pachuca Juniors (1: 1 and 1: 9) suffered. In the second half of the season (Clausura 2008) Cihuatlán was even able to win the western season and advance to the finals, where they lost 1-0 and 0-0 against the Universidad del Fútbol .

After the third division had been reformed before the 2008/09 season, Cihuatlán played in the Grupo Bajío of the Liga de Nuevos Talentos for a year before the team was withdrawn from professional football .
