history

The football club Club Deportivo Portugués was founded in 1958 in Caracas , the capital of Venezuela , by immigrants from Portugal . In the first year of its existence, the club was able to win the Venezuelan football championship. In the Primera División Venezuelas 1958, the first place was occupied with one point ahead of Deportivo Español. After they had to give up the championship the following year, the second win of the Venezuelan football championship in 1960 succeeded in a final victory, before the season the mode was converted into a knockout form, against Deportivo Español. Overall, Deportivo Portugués was one of the big teams in the early days of Venezuela's professional league, along with Deportivo Español and Deportivo Italia, today's Deportivo Petare . Two years after the second championship, the Primera División was won again in 1962, this was achieved by a victory in the final of the championship against Universidad Central FC , after both teams were tied at the end of all game days. In the following years, it took until 1967 before the championship could be won again. This time, Deportivo Portugués finished first with a seven point lead over Deportivo Galicia . Due to this success, the club was also eligible to start the Copa Libertadores 1968 . At the tournament, they were the first Venezuelan club to survive the group stage in second behind Palmeiras São Paulo and in front of Náutico Capibaribe and Deportivo Galicia and were qualified for the second round, where they ended up against Peñarol Montevideo , Sporting Cristal and Emelec Guayaquil .

The 1967 season, however, was the last really successful for Deportivo Portugués. After that, no further championship title could be won. Only in 1972 succeeded in winning the Copa Venezuela, the Venezuelan cup competition that had previously been won in 1959. In league operations, Deportivo Portugués was able to hold on to the Primera División for some time, before relegation to the second division came in 1979 after a few years with poor placements. The club could not recover from this and major financial problems began. In 1985 the four-time Venezuelan champions declared themselves bankrupt, the team was banned from playing and the club was dissolved. Many players then joined Marítimo Caracas , also of Portuguese origin.
