Depression (anatomy)

In anatomy, depression is the process of pulling down a structure. Muscles that function as “pullers” are called depressors . This function was also eponymous for some muscles:

• Musculus depressor anguli oris ("pulling down the corner of the mouth")
• Musculus depressor labii inferioris ("pulling down the lower lip")
• Musculus depressor septi nasi ("puller of the nasal septum")
• Musculus depressor supercilii ("pulling down the eyebrow")

The opposite movement is called elevation , the corresponding muscles are called levators .
