The Mayor of Delft and his daughter

The Mayor of Delft and his daughter , also called The Citizen of Delft and His Daughter , is a painting by the Dutch painter and master of the genre painting Jan Steen, completed in 1655 . The painting was created during the Golden Age and was made using the technique of oil on canvas with the dimensions 82.5 × 68.5 cm. It has been in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam since 2004 .

In the center of the picture is a group of four people in front of a house entrance in Delft . A man in a hat sits on the stairs, legs apart, leaning against the railing, while a young girl descends the stairs to his left. To the right of the man stands a woman, accompanied by a little boy, who holds out her right hand pleading for a donation. Both are separated from the man in the hat and the young girl by the railing. In the right part of the picture you can see the Oude Delft, over which a bridge spans. A man stands on it. The west tower of the Oude Kerk , the Oude Jan, can be seen in the background .

The man with hat sitting on the stairs and the young girl going down the stairs are the grain dealer Adolph Croeser and his daughter Catharina. This identification did not take place until 2006 and thereby solved a centuries-old mystery. Originally it was thought that the mayor of Delft was shown in the picture. The composition of the picture was the model for the works of other Dutch artists, such as Gabriel Metsu , Pieter de Hooch , and Jacob Ochtervelt .

This painting is both Jan Steen oeuvre unique, and in the Dutch painting, as in this work of art so many genres ( genre picture , veduta , still life and portrait ) were combined in a clever way.
