The Scherbensammler is the third book about Jette Weingärtner and her friend Merle. After the murder of Caro ( strawberry picker , volume 1) and the dangerous first love of Ilka, Mike's friend ( girl painter , volume 2), they decided to take a year off to think about the future. Merle starts working at the shelter and is even more committed to animal welfare than before, Jette is doing a voluntary social year in a home for people with dementia , and Mike and Ilka have traveled to Brazil.

The quiet life is over when Imke Thalheim, a famous author, asks her daughter Jette to let the cats into the house. She meets Mina, who is sitting in the bushes very frightened and is completely smeared with blood. Jette takes her to the shared apartment. It turns out that Mina is a patient of the therapist Tilo Baumgart, the friend of Jette's mother. At Mina's request, he informs the girls that she has a dissociative identity disorder and that there are gaps in memory as a result . So she cannot exonerate herself from the murder of her father, who was the head of a religious circle, and would have had a motive. The situation comes to a head when Max Gaspar, Mina's father's right-hand man, is also murdered.

Mina's friend Ben is like a son to Mina's parents and like a brother to them. He helped her endure her father's religious punishments and partially accepted her punishments. Ben doesn't know that Mina is multiple, just thinks she is capricious. When she leaves home without him, he starts looking for her. He clings to Tilo's heels, visits her and confesses his love for her, but she rejects him.

Ms. Sternberg, a person with dementia, offers Jette her holiday home by the sea for relaxation. She accepts and wants to retire there with Merle and Mina until Mina regains her memory. But Ben gets in their way. He wants to take Mina with him and get rid of Jette and Merle. Mina tells him about the holiday home, whereupon Ben takes her there. Mina remembers and Ben turns out to be the two-time killer. When he sends Jette shopping and threatens her with Merle's death, she manages to call the police in the supermarket.
