The plot takes place two years after the events in volume 4. Jette, Merle, Mina, Ilka and Mike now live together on an old farm. Lukas, Jette's new friend, dropped out of a criminal organization and has since lived in the witness protection program with a new identity. He doesn't tell Jette about that, although he's now with her. When Lukas' roommate Albert Kluth is found murdered in the bathtub of the shared flat in Cologne , he fled. Commissioner Bert Melzig, who was transferred to Cologne, is investigating together with his colleague Tessa Wiefinger.

Lukas ends up on the run in Aachen , where he leaves his old Volvo behind and exchanges it for a Golf in which he has hidden various license plates and identities . He leaves Jette a message on the mailbox that he has nothing to do with Albert's death and that she was the best in his life, but that they are no longer allowed to see each other. Jette and Merle go looking for him.

Always anxious not to be persecuted by his former friend and now archenemy Kristof, who is now a leading member of the organization, Lukas continues on his way to Hildesheim and stays there in a small holiday apartment. When he returns from breakfast, he finds the apartment door ajar and discovers the dead student Lisa on the bidet . There is a smiley face in red lipstick and the message "No. 2" written on the mirror. Lukas fled again and made his way to Aurich, where he saw another member of the organization: Ron.

Merle and Jette became aware of the second murder through a newspaper article and are investigating in Hildesheim. After a failed conversation with a journalist, Commissioner Bert Melzig picks up the two and sends them home. Lukas makes his way to his parents' house in Bautzen and stays in a hotel in Kamenz, where the third victim, Siri, is found by her friend Achim Penske in the hotel elevator. Lukas also leaves this place in a panic and makes his way to his old Jiu Jitsu trainer Akito Ono, who lives in a house in Pirna . Ono trains with Lukas and gives him his car. Lukas managed to shake off his pursuers.

In the meantime the shelter was broken into and all cats except one tomcat were cruelly murdered. Mike is found dejected by Ilka and taken to the hospital. Jette receives a text message with the message "No. 4" and a smiley, but Mike survives. Jette works at St. Marien when she receives a call from Lukas who wants to meet her in a nearby log cabin in the forest. Jette immediately agrees and asks Beckie to take over her shift. She agrees and leaves her car to Jette. While Jette meets Lukas, Beckie is murdered by Kristof, whom he believes from behind to be Jette.

In the forest, Jette notifies the inspector as soon as Lukas has fallen asleep. At first he feels betrayed by Jette, but then accepts the call. Both are brought by Melzig to the police psychologist Isa. There Kristof shows up with his allies Ron and the Doc to end the game. Isa is shot, but survives. It turns out that Tessa Wiefinger is working with the organization. During a fight, she falls from the balcony with Ron. Neither of them survived the fall. The other perpetrators are caught and brought to justice. Lukas moves to Jette and her friends on the farm.
