Agustín de Zárate

Agustín de Zárate (* around 1514 in Valladolid ; † 1560 ) was a Spanish civil servant and historian during the Renaissance .

Zárate served as a royal official in the Council of Castile for many years and went to Peru in 1543 as a royal accountant . There he collected the material for his Historia de descubrimento y conquista del Peru , which appeared in Antwerp in 1555 . The work describes the deeds of Francisco Pizarro and the fall of the Inca Empire and was very well received. It was reprinted in Venice and Seville and translated into the main European languages.
