In 1947 the body of SS-Sturmbannführer Dr. Gerhard Bast , a member of the Gestapo and war criminal, found at the entrance of a bunker on the Austrian-Italian border. At this point in time, his son and author of this book - Martin Pollack - was less than three years old. Up to adulthood he has only a blurred picture of his father, composed of anecdotal stories from his mother. Now, 50 years later, he is actively trying to grapple with the life and murder of his father in order to "decipher whatever would remain fragmentary". He illuminates the family history of the Basts from the 19th century to the present, but a personal distance between him and his father, sketched out in the form of files and notes, remains until the end.
