The forest, the field and the wind is a short film by Simon Kleefuß from the year 2019. It's about "a story about depression, childhood and the people around it" and about asking yourself how you are actually doing. In the film, a teenager is gradually confronted with mental illnesses whose presence he has to learn to deal with.

content

The student Daniel believes that you don't understand this story if you've always felt perfect in your life, you only understand it if you've been really down to earth at least once, he doesn't wish anyone that, but he means anyway, people should be able to understand something like that. Sometimes he wished he was going back to the time when he was still a small child who didn't know any of this.

At first you don't even notice that something is wrong with you, you feel a little strange, but you think that everything is actually okay. And then, all of a sudden, there is this glass wall between yourself and the other and you feel as if you no longer belong or are no longer there. Maybe the old people would be right after all when they said that everything was better in the past. Before, when you were still a child, you just played without thinking too much, everything was still so easy.

That you let yourself fall back is actually nonsense, it is not the others who ignore you, it is you yourself who withdraw. That is not the fault of others, but your own. To be honest with yourself is damn difficult, especially when everyone is watching.

When Daniel, who repeatedly tries to analyze his feelings, has a long conversation with his best friend Chiara, who has to cope with the divorce of her parents, he no longer feels quite so alone. He already spent time with Chiara when he was little and very carefree. Like Daniel, Chiara also suffers from depression, which Daniel has not yet admitted to. Seeking and receiving help is difficult, especially for adolescents, as they have seen the extent to which society stigmatizes mental illness and that even friends are not immune from such a reaction. This makes the everyday life of sick people even more difficult and drives them further into isolation.

In a particularly desperate moment, Daniel plays with thoughts of opening his wrists, he encounters himself and asks himself the question that people would ask themselves far too seldom: "How are you, really?" The answer reads: “I think I've already felt better.” Together with Chiara he tries to find a feasible way. They read and make music together and Chiara quotes a sentence from the book she is currently reading: "If you keep going straight ahead, you should come to yourself at some point." She also accompanies him to the therapy center, where he asks the question, whether he was sure that he really wanted therapy. Chiara says he'll only find out if he goes inside. She reminds Daniel of the sentence from the book, points her head to the door and says: "There is forward!" "And you?", Asks Daniel, Chiara's answer: "After you."
