The secret key to the universe

The Secret Key to the Universe is a children's book jointly written by Stephen Hawking and his daughter Lucy Hawking and published in 2007 under the original title George's Secret Key to the Universe . It was translated into German by Irene Rumler that same year. Quint Buchholz designed the cover design and four illustrations for the book. The book covers phenomena of the solar system and the universe . The sequel is The Incredible Journey into the Universe .

The boy George meets his new neighbors Annie and her father, the scientist Eric Bellis, who teach him how to view the earth from space. Eric's powerful computer called Cosmos makes this possible by projecting doors into space. The two children can travel through space. Eric's old enemy Graham Reeper wants to take over the computer Cosmos and thereby endangers George, Eric and Annie. Through a trick he almost manages to put Eric in a black hole forever. Can George prevent that?

  • In his book review in the Süddeutsche Zeitung , Helmut Hornung praised the fact that the book is able to “captivate” and bring the reader closer to a “wealth of knowledge”.
  • In the weekly newspaper Die Zeit , Christoph Drösser rates positively that “the reader learns a lot about the solar system and the universe in an entertaining way” and is “up to date with the current state of planetary research”.

Awards

In October 2007 the book was selected as YOUTH book of the month by the German Academy for Children's and Young Adult Literature. In January 2008 it was awarded the Reading Peter KINDERbuch prize by the GEW's youth literature and media working group .
