Derek Rabelo

Derek Rabelo (born May 25, 1992 in Guarapari , Brazil ) is a Brazilian surfer .

Life

Rabelo was born on May 25, 1992, the son of a surf shop owner. He suffered from congenital glaucoma and was blind from birth. Despite numerous operations in his childhood, his eyesight did not improve. His father chose his first name after the Hawaiian professional surfer and world surfing champion Derek Ho , because he hoped his son could one day become a professional surfer too. At the age of 17 Rabelo started with his father and later in a friend's surf school with his first steps on the surfboard. Soon he was able to surf safely on the board and ventured into surfing tubes . His dream became to surf the infamous Hawaiian banzai pipeline spot. After intensive preparation, he succeeded in doing this in 2012. A video clip produced about this on YouTube caused a sensation and aroused interest in the surfing scene. As a result, Rabelo's life was filmed in a documentary that was released in 2014 under the name Beyond Sight - The Derek Rabelo Story . Rabelo has appeared on numerous television shows so far.

On February 23, 2017 he married the German Madeline Kunert in Perth / Australia.
