geography

View of Guarapari

Guarapari is about 50 kilometers south of Vitória , the capital of the state. From Rio de Janeiro is about 500 kilometers northeast away.

The seaside resorts of Ubu , Castelhanos , Anchieta , Irirí , Marataízes and Meaípe are in the vicinity .

history

The settlement of Aldeia de Santa Maria de Guaraparim has existed there since the construction of a chapel in honor of Santa Ana by Jesuit missionaries around José de Anchieta in 1585 . Guarapari became a town in 1679 and a town in 1891.

Tourism began in the 1930s. In the 1990s, the city changed a lot due to tourism. Today, high-rise buildings dominate the scene.

Radioactivity of the beaches

The high natural radioactivity of the beaches, which is one of the highest natural radiation levels in the world, is exceptional . It is caused by the black monazite sand that occurs there and contains thorium . The absorbed dose rate in the city is around 0.1 to 0.4 μGy / h, corresponding to 0.9 to 3.5 mGy per year, with hotspots on beaches with values of up to 15.0 μGy / h in Guarapari and up to 32 μGy / h were measured in neighboring Meiape.

Despite, or rather because of, this high level of radiation exposure, the city is nicknamed cidade saude , translated: City of Health. Staying on the radioactive beaches is said to have a healing effect.
