Santa Leopoldina , officially Portuguese Município de Santa Leopoldina , is a Brazilian community and small town with an estimated population of 12,300 as of July 1, 2018 in the state of Espírito Santo , about 44 kilometers inland from the state capital Vitória , with a predominantly German-born Protestant population.

history

Santa Leopoldina was founded in 1856 by around 60 Swiss immigrants who came across the Santa Maria River. A short time later, in 1857, around 200 immigrants from Germany and Luxembourg followed , with some Tyroleans also joining. In 1859 the Colonia Tirol was founded as an agricultural colony in the municipality of Tyroleans from the Stubaital and Oberinntal .

The original name, "Cachoeiro de Santa Leopoldina", was given to the community in 1860 by the mother of the Emperor of Brazil Pedro II. Maria Leopoldine , Archduchess of Austria.

In the 19th century the city was, for a time, the most important economic center in the region. However, the influence diminished again when roads competed with shipping. The Santa Maria River was the city's greatest asset as it was navigable all the way to the Atlantic.

The first highway ( Rodovia ) in the state was built between Santa Leopoldina and Santa Teresa and was finished in 1918. In 1924 it was extended to Vitória . Cashoiero de Santa Leopoldina was elevated to a parish in 1887. In 1943 the name of the municipality was changed: The part of the name "Cachoeiro de" (Portuguese for waterfall of ) was removed.

In 1891 Santa Teresa split off from Santa Leopoldina and in 1986 the district of Jetibá also separated from Santa Leopoldina as the new Munizip Santa Maria de Jetibá .
