São Mateus , officially Portuguese Município de São Mateus , is a city in the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo . It was founded in 1544 and had an estimated 128,542 inhabitants as of July 1, 2018, who are called Mateenser (Portuguese mateenses ). It is the second oldest and eighth largest city of 78 municipalities in the state.
São Mateus has been the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of São Mateus since 1958 . It has been headed by Bishop Zanoni Demettino Castro since 2007 .

São Mateus is located on the left bank of the Rio São Mateus . The distance to Vitória , the capital of the state, is 215 kilometers.
The city borders Boa Esperança , Pinheiros and Conceição da Barra to the north, São Gabriel da Palha, Vila Valério, Jaguaré and Linhares to the south and Nova Venécia to the west. To the east the city borders the Atlantic Ocean .
