history

Vila Velha (German: “Old Village”) is the oldest city in the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo (German: “Holy Spirit”). It was founded on May 23, 1535 under the name “Vila do Espírito Santo” (English: “Villa of the Holy Spirit”) by the Portuguese Vasco Fernandes Coutinho, who established his base there. This was the main base of the Portuguese Navy until 1549, before it was moved to Vitória (German: “Victory”).

As the most populous municipality, it is home to a large industrial port, important for Brazil, as well as the largest commercial center in the state and has a 32-kilometer coastline. This is divided into different beaches, which offer tourist attractions.

As it is the oldest city, there are many buildings from the 16th century, such as the B. the Convento da Penha (Eng .: "rock monastery") and the Rosáriokirche; from the 17th century the Forte de São Francisco Xavier (English: “Fortress of St. Francis Xavier”) and from the 19th century the Farol de Santa Luzia (English: lighthouse of St. Lucia of Syracuse).

etymology

At the beginning of the colonization of Espírito Santo, the nickname “canela-verde” (English: green shin) arose. According to legend, the indigenous people there gave this nickname to the first settlers. When they got out of their boats, they stained their pants and ankles with green water algae, which were very abundant on the coast at the time. Another story goes that the nickname comes from the long and green stockings that the Portuguese used to wear at the time.

Nowadays the name "Capixaba" is used nationwide. This word comes from the language of the indigenous people of the time and referred to their corn fields, which were on the island of Vitória before the Portuguese arrived. Also, “Capixaba” is generally used for anything that relates to the state of Espírito Santo.

division

The municipality of Vila Velha is made up of 5 districts: Centro (German: city center), Argolas (German: cufflinks), Ibes (pt .: I nstituto do B em E star S ocial; German: Institute for Social Wellbeing) , São Torquato (Eng. Saint Torquatus ) and Jucu (from the river of the same name “Jucu”, indigenous for cinnamon tree).

The most populous district is the city center, where the most important parts of the city are located: Centro Empresarial (German business center), Centro Histórico da Prainha (German old town), Praia da Costa (German: coastal beach) and Pólo Comercial da Glória (German. : Trade pole).

This division has been in effect since January 1, 1979, when Ibes and São Torquato were incorporated into Vila Velha.
