history

The recorded history began in 1556 when two Jesuits (Braz Lourenço and Diogo Jácomo) founded the city of Santa Cruz under the name Aldeia Nova ( New Village ). Aldeia Nova was later renamed Aldeia Velha ( Old Village ). Aldeia Velha was officially founded as a city in 1848 and changed its name to Santa Cruz. In 1943 the city and the district were renamed Aracruz. The most important economic asset was the jacaranda wood. Sauaçu became the capital in 1948 because it was more economically important. Emperor Peter II slept in Santa Cruz in 1860. It allows 386 Italian families to settle in Santa Cruz. They founded the Fazenda Nova Trento (New Trento Farm) around 1874. Another wave of Italian immigrants came in 1872 when a ship called Sofia brought 386 Italians from the Trento region . They founded the Nova Trento colony .

population

Today, around 1500 Amerindians live in Aracruz, spread over six reserves: Caieiras Velha, Comboios, Irajá, Pau Brasil, Tekoá and Três Palmeiras. They are fighting a fierce battle with the paper industry, which is threatening their country and livelihood. These Indians are divided into two tribes: Tupiniquim and Guarani . The Indians no longer speak their original languages.
