Derepression

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In genetics, derepression denotes the lifting of a repression of a gene .

properties

Not all genes are read at all times. Some genes are only transcribed in certain periods of time (e.g. during ontogenesis ) and in individual cell types (e.g. in individual tissues or organs ). Repression prevents the transcription of a gene, while derepression is the reverse process.

Derepression occurs by releasing a blocked gene, e.g. B. by binding an inducer to the repressor or by epigenetic modification. The bound inducer leads to a release of the repressor from the operator in the operon whose transcription is blocked. The derepressed operon can then lead to gene expression through transcription . Examples of derepression are the regulation of the transcription of the δ-aminolevulinate synthase or the receptor of the luteinizing hormone .

Incorrectly derepressed genes occur e.g. B. in cancer .
