Derodontoidea is the only superfamily of the suborder Derodontiformia within the beetle suborder Polyphaga .

features

The assumed autapomorphy , which distinguishes the group from the closely related suborder Bostrichiformia, is the more flattened head with protruding (prognathic) mouthparts of the larvae. In the species of the Bostrichiformia the head is spherical and the mouthparts directed downwards (hypognathic).

Distribution and way of life

The button beetles (Derodontidae) are holarctic and distributed in the warm areas adjacent to the south, the Nosodendridae, like the Jacobsoniidae, are distributed worldwide, but the latter occur mainly in the warm areas of the earth, especially on numerous islands.

Taxonomy and systematics

The three families that are assigned to this group were previously included in the partial order Bostrichiformia . Their monophyly , however, is better founded without these families, which is why the establishment of a separate partial order appears justified. The three families were originally assigned to very different, not closely related taxa . Ultimately, however, its current summary and thus the suspected monophyly remains uncertain.
