The law on the legal protection of design , short design law (former Design Act ), a German rule which designs defined nationwide conceptually and concretely protect. The current version, in which the name of the protected property was changed from registered design to registered design, dates from October 19, 2013. Previously, in March 2004, a new version of the Design Law based on Directive 98/71 / EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of October 13, 1998 on the legal protection of designs (OJ EC No. L 289 p. 28) the old design law from 1876 and the character law from 1981 were replaced.

The Design Act is supplemented by the Design Ordinance (DesignV) of January 2, 2014 ( Federal Law Gazette I p. 18 ), previously the Design Ordinance .

With the new version of 2014, the Council Regulation (EC) No. 6/2002 of December 12, 2001 on Community Designs (GGV) of March 6, 2002 was included in German law. It enables the registration of the Community design .
