history
Deurne was a parish in the Middle Ages that was partly subordinate to the Bishop of Liège and partly to the Lord of Rijen (see: Gilze-Rijen ). After about 1880 the place began to develop into a suburb of Antwerp. In 1983 it became a district of Antwerp.
The stadium "De Bosuil" (German: Waldkauz, -eule) was between 1905 and 1970 the traditional setting of the annual football friendly matches between the national teams of Belgium and the Netherlands . Because the club Royal Antwerp , which currently (2006/07 season) plays in the second Belgian division, ran into financial problems in 2005, it is now threatened with sale and demolition for the purpose of housing construction.
