The German-Polish Neighborhood Treaty (official contract between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Poland on good neighborliness and friendly cooperation , Polish tract między Rzeczypospolitą Polską a Republiką Federalną Niemiec o dobrym sąsiedztwie i przyjaznej współpracy z June 17, 1991 r. ) Signed in Bonn in 1991 by Helmut Kohl (Federal Chancellor), Hans-Dietrich Genscher (Federal Foreign Minister), Jan Krzysztof Bielecki (Prime Minister of Poland) and Krzysztof Skubiszewski (Polish Foreign Minister). It supplements the German-Polish border treaty negotiated in autumn 1990 , which was one of the preconditions on the part of the Allies for German reunification .

Both treaties were ratified by the parliaments at the end of 1991 and came into force on January 16, 1992.

In June 2011, the German and Polish governments passed a joint declaration in Warsaw on the 20th anniversary of the German-Polish neighborhood agreement. Both sides are counting on an even closer partnership in the future in order to "continue the reconciliation process between Germans and Poles".

Among other things, the development of youth and academic exchanges is planned. The Germans of Polish origin and the German minority in Poland are to be supported in maintaining their cultural identity and their mother tongue. The aim is also to improve the transport routes between the two countries and to establish a close partnership in the EU and at international level.

Others

Also on June 17, 1991, the aforementioned signed the agreement on the establishment of the German-Polish Youth Office (DPJW). The DPJW started its work at the beginning of 1993.
