German Gemological Society

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Deutsche Gemmologische Gesellschaft eV (DGemG) ( German Society for Gemstone Studies) is a non-profit technical-scientific association in the field of gemology ( gemstone studies ) based in the gemstone metropolis Idar-Oberstein .

The two most important purposes anchored in the statutes are the promotion of gemology as a science and technology as well as the development of education and training in the field of gemology.

history

The German Society for Gemstone Studies was founded in 1932 by the Idar-Oberstein gemstone dealer and gemologist Georg Otto Wild . It is one of the three oldest gemological institutes in the world. Gemology courses have been offered since 1935 and since 1952 she has been the editor of the journal “GEMMOLOGIE. Journal of the German Gemological Society ". From 1935 to 1975 the gemological courses took place in the industrial hall in Idar-Oberstein.

In 1968 the company was renamed "Deutsche Gemmologische Gesellschaft eV" (DGemG). This was followed by the systematization of training and further education into the three educational areas of gemstone science, diamond science and pearls / organic substances. The corresponding basic research and applied gemstone research was carried out at Heidelberg University .

In 1969 the DGemG founded the "Professor-Dr.-Karl-Schlossmacher-Foundation" (named in honor of Karl Schlossmacher ), which has been run since 1979 as the "German Foundation for Gemstone Research" (DSEF). 1975 was the opening year of the house of the German Gemmological Society in the Professor-Schlossmacher-Straße and establishment of the German Gemmological Training Center - German professional promotion agency for gemstone studies. 1986 saw the introduction of the international qualification FGG member of the German Gemmological Society, Fellow of the German Gemmological Association for the promotion of projects for business-related research by the Ministry of Economics of Rhineland-Palatinate. In 2000, the training and further education seminars and teaching content were reformed into an industry-oriented education program, and in 2009 the company was certified as a carrier for the promotion of professional development in accordance with the Recognition and Admission Ordinance for Further Education (AZWV) and certification of the training and further education programs.

Cooperations

The German Gemmological Society maintains close cooperation in research and teaching with geoscientific institutes at German universities such as the Universities of Mainz , Heidelberg , Hamburg , Würzburg , Bonn , the Rhineland-Palatinate University of Applied Sciences and gemological societies, institutes and laboratories worldwide.

DGemG employees act as representatives of German gemology in international committees in the gemstone and jewelry industry, such as the International Gemology Conference ( IGC), the International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA), the World Jewelery Confederation CIBJO , the Gemstone Industry and Laboratory Conference (GILC) and the Federation for European Education in Gemmology (FEEG).

membership

Membership in the German Gemological Society is open to everyone. it includes

  • Access to industry or specialist events, such as B. Trade fairs or conferences
  • the reference to the magazine “GEMMOLOGIE. Journal of the German Gemmological Society ”with various articles on gemological topics
  • Two conferences per year with gemological lectures by speakers from science and practice and / or workshops with the opportunity to examine the exhibits on the respective topic yourself
  • The possibility of obtaining the title of specialist member of the German Gemmological Society (FGG) after participating in the education programs of the DGemG with the obligation to continue training in advanced training seminars.

Journal of the DGemG

GEMMOLOGY. The journal of the German Gemmological Society is primarily a technical and scientific publication for the members of the German Gemmological Society. It has been published at regular intervals since 1952, currently in two double issues annually, and contains articles on the results of gemstone research and investigation as well as brief gemological information.

Initial and continuing education

According to their own account, around 30,000 seminar participants from 80 countries attended courses and educational programs of the DGemG, which are offered in German and English. They are divided into gemology (gemology), diamond science (graduation) and pearls / organic substances.

After completing the specialist examination, which includes all three educational programs, the participant receives the certificate of competence to independently issue gemstone findings reports and can acquire the title of “Member of the German Gemological Society” (FGG). The training center in the middle of the gemstone metropolis Idar-Oberstein has seminar and laboratory rooms as well as a teaching collection.

research

The Deutsche Gemmologische Gesellschaft eV supports both basic and applied research in all areas of gemology, in particular through the statutory funding of the German Gemstone Research Foundation (DSEF). The research content is divided into the following areas:

  • Determination of the properties of new gemstone materials
  • Recording of origin-specific characteristics of gemstones
  • Distinguishing features of gemstones and syntheses, imitations and artificial products
  • Determination of the identifying features of artificially modified gemstone materials

The results obtained from this are subject to a current technology transfer in the industry through publication z. B. in its own magazine "GEMMOLOGIE", lectures and specialist conferences at home and abroad (including own workshops) as well as content-related consideration in the educational programs of the German Gemological Training Center. The laboratory of the German Gemstone Research Foundation (DSEF) now meets the requirements of an international gemological service facility for the industry. Gemstone identification and authenticity testing, the creation of findings reports of international standards on origin and possible artificial changes in the properties of colored gemstones with examination methods include the range of services offered by DSEF as well as examinations such as B. the color fastness of diamonds or color causes of colored gemstones as well as the determination of pearls and cultured pearls.
