German war cemetery in Narva

The German War Cemetery Narva is a collective cemetery in the city of Narva on the Narva River in Estonia. About 15,000 war dead of the German Wehrmacht in World War II and soldiers who died in prisoner-of-war camps are buried.

From the city center in Narva , road 91 leads northwards first as Aleksander Puškini and later as Jõesuu. The cemetery is on the right-hand side of the street at number 33-39. It extends to the embankment above the Narva River . The Narva River forms the border between Estonia and Russia.

A cemetery was established here in 1943, where 4,000 fallen soldiers were buried. It was leveled after 1945. The new war cemetery for 15,000 fallen soldiers was inaugurated on August 29, 1999 by the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge on the cemetery grounds. A 4.50 meter high natural stone cross marks the cemetery. Memorial steles with the names of the more than 4,000 fallen from the first occupation phase from 1943 to 1945 commemorate the war dead. The exact grave locations are no longer known. Only the boundaries of the burial grounds were identified and protected.

The graves of the 10,758 fallen in bed since 1999 are marked with grave crosses or inscription panels.

The dead

The dead are German and foreign fallen soldiers of the Wehrmacht or soldiers who died in a POW camp. Up to 2008, 10,758 war dead were buried here. A well-known buried person is the former German soccer player Willi Tiefel .
