The German furniture shipping company (DMS) is a German, world-wide service in transport, packing and logistics based in Berlin-Adlershof . It was founded in 1968 by initially 21 shareholders ( transport companies or moving companies ) as a cooperative network. In 2013, Deutsche Möbelspeditions had 7,400 employees in 66 independent partner companies at 120 locations across Germany. There are currently 15 employees at the DMS headquarters in Berlin.

history

Based on the idea of cooperation in load space equalization (LRA), in which the existing load space should be used and empty journeys should be minimized, on May 22, 1968, on the initiative of Dieter Reimold, 21 medium-sized furniture forwarding companies founded DMS Deutsche Möbelspedition GmbH & Co. KG.

The meaning and purpose of the cooperation was a corporate model in which owner-managed freight forwarding companies network with one another and work together while maintaining their independence.

The first years

In 1970 DMS Mietmöbelwagen KG was added, which offered rental cars for “do-it-yourself” removals. In 1974 DMS International followed with a focus on international traffic. In 1972, DMS was the first in the transport industry to have a trademark patented - the arrow square “The clever move”.

In 1977, DMS was registered with the Cartel Office as a medium- sized cartel and exempted from the cartel ban in accordance with Section 3 GWB .

German-German relations

After German reunification, the company opened a representative office in Berlin in 1990. Head of the DMS representative office in Berlin was the later managing director Wolfgang Worms. One year later, on the occasion of the DMS spring conference in May 1991, the first 5 freight forwarders from the new federal states were accepted as shareholders in DMS in Saarbrücken.

Structural reform

With the aim of a homogeneous corporate structure, according to which all shareholders become limited partners in DMS-KG and DMS-GmbH concentrates on pure management tasks through the full-time managing director, DMS reformed in 1993.

In 1995 the first 16 DMS partner companies were certified in the area of environmental and quality management according to the international standard DIN EN ISO 9001 . The remaining DMS operations followed successively. Since then, the cross-company group certifications have been mandatory for all DMS shareholder companies.

Global networking

At the turn of the millennium, DMS tried to establish contacts with logistics companies abroad. As a result of this initiative, Britannia Movers International (Great Britain), Les Gentlemen du Déménagements (France), Il Proffesioniste del Transloco (Italy), Mondial Movers (Netherlands) and DMS Deutsche Möbelspedition joined the EMG (European Moving Group) in July 2001 together.

This was followed in 2007 by the takeover of OTB Overseas Transport GmbH, a transport company specializing in overseas removals.

centralization

DMS Logo: international environmental management standard

In order to centralize all activities, the previously decentralized DMS offices - the DMS headquarters from Düsseldorf, the DMS International based in Bonn and the DMS representative office in Berlin - were merged to form one headquarters. In 2010 the supervisory board and the management decided to merge the independent companies DMS-Zentrale and DMS-International according to the growth model .

Until the renewal of the antitrust law in 2005, the DMS cooperation association was registered as a so-called SME cartel and thus formally exempted from the cartel ban . With the reform of the Cartel Act, the exemption was no longer applicable, so that the DMS companies were obliged to determine whether they were in conformity with cartel law themselves. Since this brought with it a certain legal uncertainty, the DMS headquarters implemented a DMS code of honor in the rules of procedure and the shareholder agreements in coordination with the Federal Cartel Office and in cooperation with a law firm.

In addition to the generally valid certification according to the international DIN EN ISO 9001 standard, the first 11 DMS shareholder companies and the DMS headquarters began to certify the companies by TÜV Rheinland in accordance with the international environmental management standard DIN ISO 14001 .
