The VEB Deutsche Schiffahrts- und Umschlagbetriebe (DSU) was an inland shipping company in the GDR .

history

As early as 1946, the “Arbeitsgemeinschaft Binnenschiffahrt” (AGB) was founded, with which the transfer of inland navigation into state or state-owned ownership began. In 1946, the fleet of the AG Binnenschiffahrt comprised a total of 955 barges with a total load capacity of 327,906 tons. The establishment of the AGB did not significantly increase the share of state-owned ships in public ownership, but it increased the pressure on private boaters to transfer their ships into state-owned ownership.

In order to achieve this goal more quickly, the AGB was dissolved again in 1949 and the "Deutsche Schiffahrts- und Umschlagbetriebszentrale" (DSU) was founded as a state-owned company on October 1, 1949, before the GDR was founded. The DSU had the task of carrying out all freight and passenger transports on the waterways of the GDR, including the handling and storage of goods. She had the sole affreightment right for inland shipping. This meant that the private boaters were now obliged to complete transport orders with the DSU. However, it was not until the 1960s that the share of the state inland shipping fleet in the total tonnage was higher than that of private boaters.

On May 1, 1953, the "Deutsche Oderschiffahrt" (DOS) was merged with the DSU and from this the " VEB Deutsche Schiffahrts und Umschlagbetriebe" (DSU) was formed. 665 ship units (ships, tugs, barges, etc.) of the DOS were transferred to the DSU.

In 1957 the DSU was dissolved. Your transport tasks went to the VEB Deutsche Binnenreederei , abbreviated DBR, later BR. The operating facilities were transferred to the various regional "VEB inland ports", which later became operations of the "VE Combine Inland Shipping and Waterways".
