Location and architecture

The Kassel city hall is located on the site of the former Flora Park . It is located a little west of August-Bebel-Platz on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße. The town hall is adjacent to the walled public green spaces “Stadthallengarten” and “Rosengarten”.

The monumental neoclassical portico of the town hall dominates the silhouette of the surrounding area. Inside there are, among other things, two large halls, of which the largest, the ballroom , can accommodate 1,847 visitors with normal seating.

history

The interior in 1953

The initiative to build the Kassel town hall goes back to the Jewish textile entrepreneur and founder of the Vorderen West, Sigmund Aschrott . He made the building site available to his hometown free of charge, with the condition that a cultural center be created there for the citizens of Kassel.

The hall was built between 1911 and 1914 based on an award-winning design by the architects Ernst Rothe and Max Hummel . After being used for the city's millennium in September 1913, it was officially inaugurated on April 1, 1914. From 1923 to 1929, residential buildings were built between the city hall and the Red Cross Hospital based on designs by Max Hummel , which in their proportions and design language made direct reference to the city hall.

During the Second World War , the Kassel town hall got away with minor damage, only the entrance hall was hit by an incendiary bomb . The damage left by the bomb can still be seen today (a brownish stain in the hall floor).

In the post-war period, the town hall served as temporary accommodation for the state theater, whose own domicile was bombed out. Until the completion (1959) of the new theater building between Friedrichsplatz and Karlsaue, theater operations took place here. After the opening of the new State Theater, the city hall continued to be the venue for the symphony concerts of the Kassel State Orchestra.

In 1949 the entrance hall of the building was rebuilt and in the 1990s the interior of the building was completely modernized, expanded and acoustically changed by the architects HHS Planer + Architekten AG under the conditions of monument protection, with the Klais concert hall organ built in 1964 for the town hall on the north houses Dom sold. In addition, its outer facade has been restored; then the forecourt was generously redesigned. The adjacent “Ramada Hotel Kassel City Center” (also known colloquially as the “Stadthallenhotel”) was built as part of the project.

The forecourt of the town hall has been named Holger-Börner- Platz since October 29, 2007 in honor of the late Hessian Prime Minister (1976 to 1987) .

From 2010 to 2011, the colonnade wing was built a few meters north of the hall , which extends over two levels for a total of 2900 m².
