The German School Portland ( German International School , abbreviation GIS) is a German school abroad . It is located in Beaverton, Oregon , a suburb of Portland, Oregon . It is an excellent German school abroad and a member of the PASCH network of the Federal Foreign Office .

The school history

In 1993 the school started as a playgroup with four children and was officially awarded the title German American School of Portland in 1995 . It was recognized as "a school program recognized, supervised and supported by Germany".

General information about the school

The GSP comprises grades 1 to 5, pre-school and kindergarten, as well as pre- and post-school supervision. The premises include classrooms for kindergarten through 5th grade, music, art and exercise rooms, a fully equipped laboratory and a library with over 10,000 German and English books. The class size in the primary school is around 15 pupils on average. Introducing students from the age of 3 to the German language is attractive for working families, among other things, as there are all-day offers with supervision from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (Monday to Friday).

The curriculum

The school recognizes and emphasizes the positive effect that a second language has on the child's intellect and mental development. The language of instruction is primarily German, some minor subjects are taught in English. Most of the teachers speak German as their mother tongue. The school also offers a curriculum that summarizes US and German educational standards. The school offer extends up to the 5th grade, after which students have the opportunity to switch to the French American International School's Gilkey International Middle School (Gilkey) , with which there is a partnership.

The school statistics

About 130 students attended the school in the 2006/07 school year. In comparison, the school had around 145 students in the 2012/13 school year. The school is supported financially and personally by the FRG.

Extracurricular activities

The GSP also functions as a German cultural center . It houses the German Christmas market , organizes a St. Martins lantern parade and offers language courses for adults and teens as well as a translation service. The GSP is certified by the city as a green school . In this context, there is a student-oriented environmental program in partnership with SolarWorld AG , which supplies the school with solar energy.
