The German Association for Water Management, Sewage and Waste eV (DWA) deals with all overarching water issues. She is committed to the development of safe and sustainable water management. As a politically and economically independent organization, it works professionally in the areas of water management , sewage , waste and soil protection . The DWA is both a rule-maker and an educational institution. In Europe, the DWA is the association with the largest number of members in this field and has a special position due to its technical competence in standardization, education and information of the public. The approximately 14,000 members represent experts and executives from municipalities, universities, engineering offices, authorities and companies.

history

As a result of the merger of the Abwassertechnischen Vereinigung eV (ATV) and the German Association for Water Management and Cultural Building eV (DVWK), the German Association for Water Management, Wastewater and Waste 2004, initially abbreviated to ATV-DVWK , was created on January 1, 2000 DWA, as it was more memorable and was one of the short names of the International Water Association IWA and European Water Association EWA . The associations that have merged have already played a major role in the development of rules for the respective subject and are involved in advanced training.

Wastewater Association

The Abwassertechnische Vereinigung eV (ATV) was founded on May 10, 1948. A core element of ATV's activity was the vocational training of employees in wastewater systems in order to impart the knowledge they need to operate the systems properly.

From September 5 to 9, 1966, ATV organized the "Third International Conference on Water Pollution Research" in Munich for the world association with 1400 participants from 43 countries. The accompanying exhibition with 151 exhibitors from 10 countries marked the birth of today's IFAT, the world's largest environmental fair. As a result, today's DWA is the oldest ideal sponsor of IFAT.

Another key element was the ATV waste / wastewater regulations. This set of rules has greatly improved the quality of the planning, construction and operation of wastewater and waste plants. The engineers were given the basics to efficiently design and implement such systems.

German Association for Water Management and Cultivation

The DVWK (German Association for Water Management and Culture Building eV) was created on October 5th, 1978 from the union of the associations Kuratorium für Wasser und Kulturbauwesen (KWK) and the German Association for Water Management (DVWW). The purpose of the DVWK was to promote the country's culture and protect the environment. The DVWK was finally divided into five different specialist bodies:

  • Water management and hydrology
  • Hydraulic engineering and hydraulics
  • Groundwater
  • Water and soil, aquatic ecology
  • water pollutant substances

Duties of the DWA

Set of rules

One of the most important tasks of the DWA is the development and updating of a technical set of rules , which is largely determined by volunteer professionals. The DWA set of rules consists of work sheets and information sheets for the areas of sewage and waste technology, soil and water protection, climate change, hydraulic engineering and water management. The set of rules reflects the current state of the art and at the same time prepares legislative requirements for water management practice. It is used for quality assurance and is the basis for training and further education. The "principles for the development of the DWA set of rules" are summarized in worksheet DWA-A 400. In addition to the set of rules, the DWA also publishes specialist books, brochures and other publications.

standardization

The DWA works with the establishment of subject-specific standards on a national and international level. This includes not only technical and scientific topics, but also the economic and legal issues of environmental and water protection.

education

The DWA organizes around 275 conferences, seminars and courses every year (as of 2016) and thus covers around 200 subject areas. The DWA is also the ideal sponsor of IFAT Munich, the largest trade fair for environmental technologies. DWA is also active at specialist trade fairs abroad, including IE expo, IFAT India, IFAT Eurasia and IFAT Africa. It trains around 37,000 people interested in education every year. The DWA organizes one-day seminars and events lasting several weeks, including vocational courses ( specialist in wastewater technology , wastewater foremen) and weekly courses for operating staff and engineers. DWA is one of the leading educational providers in the water industry.

The DWA also takes on tasks on behalf of other organizations, for example the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ).

Sewage treatment plant neighborhoods

Communal exchanges of experience, international offers and neighborhood offers complement the educational work.

The DWA organizes sewage plant neighborhoods as part of the advanced training of the operating staff . The regionally responsible DWA state associations are entrusted with the sponsorship.

The neighborhoods are regional or thematic associations of operators of water and waste management systems or of those who are obliged to maintain water bodies. The subject is professional development . Regular meetings, so-called neighborhood days , inform the participants about current developments. The focus is on the exchange of experiences. In addition to the exchange of knowledge, it is also about getting to know each other in order to create a network that extends beyond the Neighborhood Day. An important goal is mutual help with advice and action on site.

With continuous training , the DWA makes a contribution in the neighborhoods to promoting water protection and water development as well as professional and safe plant operation.

Young DWA

Experts up to and including 35 have their own network within the DWA. The Junge DWA supports young professionals in their training and career entry through special workshops, university action days, a mentoring program and regional get-togethers. In order to promote self-organization, around 2,000 young members can exchange ideas via the "Young DWA app".

Magazines

The association journals KA-Korrespondenz Abwasser and KW-Korrespondenz Wasserwirtschaft appear monthly and inform the professional world about topics such as drainage systems, municipal and industrial wastewater, water management, hydraulic engineering and hydropower. The KA-Betriebs-Info for the operating staff appears quarterly and the KW-Gewässer-Info with content on water maintenance and water development three times a year.

Library

The DWA library collects specialist literature on all topics relevant to water management. In addition, numerous titles of specialist books and specialist articles are recorded in the DWA literature database. The bibliographic data of books, series of publications, magazine articles, electronic publications and so-called "gray literature" can be researched here.

further activities

auditing

For flood and heavy rain prevention, the DWA offers municipalities and associations the opportunity to review their strategic goals for dealing with flood hazards and flood risks and to have them assessed externally. In the DWA audit , suitable measures to eliminate deficits and thus to avoid or limit damage are discussed.

Technical safety management

Operators of sewage and dam systems as well as those responsible for water maintenance can have their technical safety management (TSM) checked and certified with the DWA-TSM . The TSM proves that quality and safety standards are observed and regulations are observed.
