The German Research Institute for Nutrition and Catering GmbH (DVA / DVA) belonged to the Office Group W of the SS Economic and Administrative Main Office of the Reichsführer SS (WVHA) (as of March 1942, Document No. 146, Dachau Concentration Camp Museum). It was founded as a GmbH on January 23, 1939 with initial capital of RM 35,000 from funds from Deutsche Erd- und Steinwerke . The founder was the SS leader Oswald Pohl , head of the WVHA. The company was financed by a loan from the Red Cross amounting to 8 million Reichsmarks. The DVA was under the direction of the agricultural scientist SS-Obersturmbannführer Heinrich Vogel.

The tasks of the DVA were the cultivation and research of aromatic and medicinal herbs , the supply of German and foreign markets with "German drugs", the production and mixing of new drugs, the maintenance of laboratories, the acquisition of land and the sale of the products.

The “herb garden” in the Dachau concentration camp (name of the work detail: “Plantage”) and the plantation in the Heppenheim subcamp (name of the work detail: “Dachau”) were the best-known projects.
