The German Tent Mission e. V. (dzm) is a free Christian evangelical mission organization based in Siegen , which has made a significant contribution to the establishment of the tent mission in Germany.

history

In 1902 the evangelist Jakob Vetter founded the German tent mission. The idea of talking to many people in a tent was born during a trip to England in July and August 1899, when Vetter attended events in a mission tent. In discussions with Otto Stockmayer , Vetter further discussed the idea and then implemented it in the tent plan. The tent mission has been based in Geisweid near Siegen since 1904 . The first German tent mission took place on April 27, 1902 on the hill Tersteegensruh - named after Gerhard Tersteegen - near Mülheim an der Ruhr . A second tent was purchased as early as 1905. It was larger than the first and could hold up to 3,000 people. Five years after it was founded, the German tent mission operated five tent churches, which were used throughout Germany, but also in the Netherlands and Switzerland . In addition to Jakob Vetter, the first evangelists of the German tent mission were the evangelists Jonathan Paul , Ludwig Henrichs and Fritz Binde .

The First World War interrupted this development. In the 1920s it was resumed under the leadership of the East Prussian evangelist Ernst Krupka . Due to the political and social upheavals caused by the war, broad sections of the population were interested in the tent evenings. Resistance arose from secular and political groups who also disrupted the tent work through physical attacks.

During the time of National Socialism , the activities of the tent mission were monitored but tolerated. The Second World War brought tent work to a complete standstill. But it was rebuilt in West Germany - partly with foreign help - from 1947 onwards.

Today the association is a service provider for Christian communities and organizations. With two tent pavilions, the dzm anniversary tent and a large festival hall, an extensive and modular concept for events, the German tent mission provides many opportunities for their work. The mission work is supported solely by donations. Concepts for events without a tent were also included in the program.

management

Tobias Lang has been the managing director since January 2015, replacing Thomas Röger after almost ten years. The mission leader was Mathias Lauer from 2006 to 2018.
