from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Brandenburg (born March 17, 1895 in Riga , † 1990 in Villingen ; to distinguish it from the writer of the same name usually with his title Lic. Hans Brandenburg ) was a German Protestant theologian and author of Christian books.

Life

Hans Brandenburg, son of a merchant, was born in Riga in 1895 , which at that time still belonged to the Russian Empire. He attended the humanistic high school there until 1913, then studied in Dorpat , Berlin , Bethel , 1917/18 in Tübingen and 1918/19 in Rostock Protestant theology . After passing his theological exam in Münster, he was vicar year in Kattenvenne in 1919 . During this time he wrote his dissertation on the subject of studying Luther's Galatian Lecture from 1516/17 . In 1920 he received his doctorate as a licentiate in theology. Even during his studies he worked as a pastor and missionary . Further stations in his life were from 1920 traveling as secretary of the German Christian Student Association , in 1921 a teaching position as a lecturer in Latin, Greek and church history at the Bethel Theological School and the parish office.

After his ordination and the death of the main pastor Alfred Haensel on April 22, 1922, he became the second clergyman at St. Matthäi in Lübeck . He took over the idea of the Matthäi community from Haensel. In 1926/27 Brandenburg founded a refuge for young women at risk, the "Domblick House". With around 30 volunteers, he oversaw the children's church service. The former had developed into the community's trademark under Haensel. Even after he left the congregation in 1930, he came back to Lübeck on various occasions, such as anniversaries or repeatedly for Bible studies, speeches or sermons.

In 1930 he moved to Berlin, where he became mission inspector of the Berlin City Mission Association and headed the YMCA-Süd youth work. From the beginning of 1931 until its dissolution on June 30, 1933, he was a member of the Christian Social People's Service. In February 1934 he began his service as a pastor at the Salem Deaconess House in Lichtenrade and was chairman of the “Association of German Community Deaconess Mother Houses”. In August 1943, at the age of 48, Brandenburg was drafted into the Wehrmacht and in April 1945 was taken prisoner by the Americans, from which he returned in September. He worked in the returnees brotherhood formed after this time. From spring 1949 until his retirement he was mission inspector for the Mission Association of Light in the East , which moved to Korntal in 1951.

Brandenburg wrote numerous Christian books. In addition to missionary-motivated works, The Living Word - an introduction to the divine thought processes and life principles of the Old Testament , which he wrote together with Jakob Kroeker , with 15 self-contained volumes, is at the center of his work. This is a series of interpretations of biblical texts based on our own translations. Until the handover to Fritz Grünzweig in 1980 he wrote sermon interpretations (sermon meditations of the series Consolation and Power from God's Word ).

Private

Brandenburg married Anna Luise von dercken in 1920 and acquired German citizenship, as a return to the Baltic States was not possible due to the political circumstances at the time. In December 1934 he was married to Johanna Sterzel for the second time.
