Helmuth L. Egelkraut (born May 2, 1938 in Hofheim ; † November 2, 2018 in Weissach im Tal ) was a German Protestant theologian with an evangelical character, pastor of the Württemberg regional church , missionary , professor emeritus for theology and missiology , historian and author of several theological Technical and non-fiction books.

Live and act

Egelkraut grew up with two brothers on their parents' farm. After attending grammar school, he graduated from 1958 to 1960 with a degree in agriculture . (FH) . Through a fellow student he found his faith in 1959 and in 1960 decided to do a theological training at the theological seminar of the Liebenzeller Mission . At Nyack Missionary College and at Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary near Boston , where he taught German from 1965/1966, he completed a Master of Divinity degree from 1964 to 1966 . In December 1966 he was in the West Peabody Congregational Church ordained . From 1970 he studied for a doctorate at Princeton Theological Seminary , where he worked as a research assistant during this time . In 1973 he received his doctorate there with a dissertation on Jesus' mission to Jerusalem: a red. crit. study of the travel narrative in the Gospel of Luke, Lk 9.51-19.48 for Doctor of Theology .

From 1967 to 1970 Egelkraut worked on behalf of the Liebenzeller Mission and the South Sea Evangelical Mission as a missionary in Papua New Guinea and on the island of Manus . In Brugam in East Sepik he taught at a Bible school of which he was temporarily director. Between 1971 and 1973, in addition to his doctoral studies, he was involved in the congregation of the German Lutheran Church in east New York City . From 1973 to 1977 he was a lecturer in New Testament , ethics and missiology at the theological seminar of the Liebenzeller Mission in Liebenzell, where he organized advanced training courses for missionaries from 1975. This work led in 1979 to the establishment of the seminar for missionary training in Monbachtal , today's academy for world missions in Korntal . There he worked as a lecturer between 1990 and 2017, previously as a guest lecturer from 1987. He was full professor at Columbia International University (CIU) for Biblical Theology and Mission and from 1992 to 1998 academic dean of the Columbia Biblical Seminary (CBS) study center, today's European School of Culture and Theology in Korntal, a leading training center for evangelical missionaries in the German-speaking Europe, to the establishment of which he made a significant contribution.

From 1975 he was visiting lecturer for ethics at the Evangelical Bible School Aarau (Switzerland) and from 1978 to 1990 lecturer at the Evangelical Mission School Unterweissach (near Stuttgart) and the Theological Distance School BFU . 1977/1978 he was vicar of the Württemberg regional church in Unterreichenbach .

Egelkraut was a co-founder of the European Evangelical Accreditation Association (EEAA) and was its first chairman until 1997. He belonged to the Gnadau Theological Advisory Board and the German branch of the Lausanne movement . He was a member of the German Society for Missiology (DGMW) and the Working Group for Evangelical Missiology eV (AfeM), secretary of the Working Group for Evangelical Theology and was honorary chairman of the South German Community Association from 2003 to 2006 . He has been a speaker at conferences and teaching assignments in East Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe and the USA.

In January 2016 he received the George W. Peters Prize for his 3-year research work published in 2015 on the history of the Liebenzeller Mission during the Nazi era .

Private

Egelkraut married Dora Bott in 1967. The couple had three children and last lived in Weissach im Tal .
