The AWM gGmbH (formerly the Academy for World Mission ) based in Korntal-Münchingen near Stuttgart is an evangelical theological educational institution. Through a partnership with Columbia International University , degrees can be offered within the North American educational system. The AWM gGmbH is an organization closely related to the Evangelical Alliance . She is a member of the European Evangelical Accrediting Association (EEAA) and the Conference of Biblical Training Centers .

history

Towards the end of the 1960s and in the 1970s, when it became clear that in practice the churches and the WCC were putting conventional missionary concerns aside in favor of diaconal mandate and development aid, and when the mission theology chairs at universities were repurposed, a number of mission societies recognized this Need for evangelical training for their missionaries. The foundation for this was laid with the seminar for missionary training (SMF) as one of the first evangelical training centers for missiology in Germany. As early as 1975, Helmuth Egelkraut had offered seven-week advanced training seminars for her own missionaries on behalf of the Liebenzeller Mission , from which in 1979 the Working Group Evangelical Missions under the direction of George W. Peters started the SMF and relocated it to Monbachtal (near Bad Liebenzell ) .

After expanding the work, it was continued as the Freie Hochschule für Mission in Korntal from 1984 , which Peters headed as its first rector until 1987 and Peter Beyerhaus from 1989. In 1990 it was recognized as an external study center for Columbia Biblical Seminary . From 1994 to 1996 it was run by Ernst Vatter as a voluntary co-founder. In 2000, this resulted in the Academy for World Mission as a non-profit limited company , which was founded by the following three partners with the aim of enabling theological and intercultural training and further education:

Blumhardt House

The AWM resides in the “Blumhardt-Haus” in Korntal, named after one of the formative personalities of Swabian Pietism , Johann Christoph Blumhardt (1805–1880). From 1984 to 2007, until she acquired the building through a leasehold contract, there was a tenancy agreement with the local evangelical congregation . This was added as a further partner and became a member of the advisory board. In the burial garden, the old Korntal cemetery, which is located directly below the Blumhardt House, numerous pioneers of world mission from the early days of the Brethren are buried, including the India missionary Samuel Hebich and the East Africa missionaries Ludwig Krapf and Johannes Rebmann . Since 2018, the academy has been called simply "AWM gGmbH".

From 1989 to 1996 Peter Beyerhaus and from 2002 to 2019 Traugott Hopp was Rector of the AWM, who was replaced by Peter Westphal in June 2019.

European School of Culture and Theology

The "European School of Culture and Theology" (ESCT), in partnership with Columbia International University , USA (since 1994 ) offers a Bachelor of Arts degree with a focus on intercultural studies and four master's programs:

The dean is Tobias Menges, who replaced Bernhard Ott in this position in 2018 .

Seminars and further training

In addition to the academic branch of the ESCT, the AWM offers individual seminars on various topics as well as modular, certified further training to become an intercultural coach (2010 to 2018), since 2015 integration companion for member care or systemic organizational development (formerly: "Further training to become a systemic organizational developer"). From autumn 2018 there will be further training courses for ConViator, conflict moderation, leadership in Christian nonprofit organizations and systemic personnel development.

Graduates work at government agencies, mission societies, community associations or in social-diaconal institutions in Thailand, Kenya, Mali, Peru, Central Asia, Russia, Japan, Spain, France, India, Germany and other countries.

European Institute for Migration, Integration and Islamic Issues

The European Institute for Migration, Integration and Islamic Issues (EIMI) was founded in 2013 . The aim is to advise, research and network processes and projects in the area of ​​migration and integration, as well as training to become an integration companion. It offers courses, advice, lectures and training for full-time and volunteer workers in migration and refugee work who want to strengthen their intercultural skills.

The director of the institute is Yassir Eric.

Support association

The sponsoring association of AWM e. V. was founded in 2006 and has set itself the goal of providing financial support to students. He is the founder of the "Ludwig Krapf Prize".

Ludwig Krapf Prize

Since 2007, the AWM gGmbH's Friends' Association has awarded the Ludwig Krapf Prize, endowed with 500 euros, which recognizes the special academic achievements of AWM students, innovative strategies in intercultural work or special life achievements that are closely linked to the goals and vision of the academy are. The award is named after the Tübingen missionary Johann Ludwig Krapf , who is considered the "father" of the East African revival movement.

The Lebens.Werk Prize has been awarded annually since 2017 and is endowed with 500 euros. It wants to honor long-term, outstanding commitment and applies to people who have lived with and for people of other languages ​​and cultures over a long period of time and who have helped build up Christians through their role model, leadership and passion.
