Georges Lampin

Georges Lampin (born October 14, 1901 in Saint Petersburg , Russian Empire , † May 8, 1979 in Pau , Pyrénées-Atlantiques , France ) was a Russian-born French film director , screenwriter and film producer . He became known with films such as The Idiot , Guilt and Atonement or The King's Best Man .

life and career

Born and raised in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Georges Lampin emigrated to France at the age of twenty , where he first worked as an assistant to Abel Gance and René Clair . In the 1930s he finally made a name for himself as a producer of films by Pierre Billon , Marcel L'Herbier , Maurice Gleize and Jeff Musso . One of his better-known productions from this period was the adventure film The Night of Retribution with Viviane Romance , directed by director Jean Choux . In the 1940s he then mostly appeared as a director himself.

In 1946 he made his directorial debut with the literary film adaptation The Idiot based on the novel of the same name by the Russian writer Dostoyevsky . Edwige Feuillère , Lucien Coëdel and Gérard Philipe played the leading roles .

In the decades that followed, Georges Lampin made over ten films, including dramas such as Return to Life with Serge Reggiani , crime films such as Smugglers at Work with Ginette Leclerc and, in the late 1950s and early 1960s, adventure films such as The King's Best Man with Jean Marais or The Citadel von San Marco with Louis Jourdan in the male lead, where he wrote the script for the film himself. Then he retired from the film business.

Georges Lampin died on May 8, 1979 at the age of 77 in Pau.
