The theological distance school BFU e. V. is a theological training center purely on a correspondence course basis. It offers distance learning in practical theology , church history , congregational education , biblical studies and other subjects on an evangelical basis, which is recognized as a distance learning course by the State Central Agency for Distance Learning (ZFU). Its legal form is that of a registered association . It is an organization closely related to the Evangelical Alliance , a member of the Conference of Biblical Training Centers, and its focus is differentiated from historical-critical research. The head of the study is Helmut Schröder.

Course offer

The range of courses differentiates between leisure courses, general education courses, advanced seminars, community colleges and contact studies. Those who want to study long-term through BFU can choose between two correspondence courses that correspond to the one-year or two-year training at a theological college and end with an equivalent degree. The courses are recognized by many organizations and advanced training institutions, so that on the one hand students can continue their studies in theological seminars with the BFU degree and on the other hand can qualify for church-social tasks and work in Christian organizations. BFU now also offers e-learning.

Training spectrum

The school currently offers around 40 detailed individual courses in the areas of biblical studies, doctrine of the faith, practical theology, ancient languages, etc. The target group of these correspondence courses are Christians and those interested in the Christian faith who are employed, do their theological training and want to get to know the Bible, aspects of church work, church history and similar topics in detail. The offer differentiates between "leisure courses" and "general education courses". The latter are approved by the State Central Office for Distance Learning (ZFU). Distance learning has the advantage that each student can determine the location of his / her theological studies, integrate the learning time into his / her everyday life and continue to pursue the profession.

social commitment

The school is committed to helping prisoners in various countries. In cooperation with institutions such as the Black Cross , the Endangered Aid Scheideweg and other organizations, the BFU offers discounted theological courses for prison inmates in order to interest them in the Christian message and to make rehabilitation easier for them. These scholarships are financed by a support group. In 2010, BFU looked after around 15 prisoners in Germany and abroad.

history

The distance course work by BFU Theologische Fernschule e. V. began in 1971 as a department of the Bergstrasse Bible School , at that time under the name Biblical Distance Learning . V. (today Biblical Studies College ). The Theological Distance School BFU has been an independent, non-profit association since 1992. In 1985 BFU became a member of the professional association for distance learning and learning media, "Forum DistancE-learning" (formerly: German Distance Learning Association).

Merger with "ICI University" and expansion of the study program

In 2014 the Theological Distance School BFU took over the ICI University ( International Correspondence Institute GmbH) in Asslar-Berghausen. Since then, around 1,000 students have been looked after annually from Worms. ICI Germany was founded in 1979. The two study programs complement each other: BFU offers low-threshold theological training on a correspondence course basis with contact studies, which corresponds to the one or two-year training in a theological seminar. ICI offers a range of courses at university level through which one can acquire a Bachelor of Arts in theological and missiological subjects. Here graduates can work on their master’s degree in English . While ICI is accredited in the USA ( Global University , Springfield), BFU attaches great importance to the approval of distance learning courses by the State Central Agency for Distance Learning (ZFU) in Cologne.
